KTX and accommodation

A major transport congress overlaps for three festival days, increasing the risk of tight inventory.

The festival dates are firm, but the useful planning question is what remains fluid. This guide separates confirmed 2026 information from previous-edition descriptions, then builds a realistic KTX trip around the main Anmok venue.

The Gangneung Coffee Festival 2026 pairs a confirmed five-day event with a flexible, car-free East Sea trip from Seoul.

Key takeaways

  • The Gangneung Coffee Festival 2026 is confirmed for October 21–25, with Gangneung Coffee Street at Anmok Beach as the main address and activity planned across Gangneung.

  • Use the current 10:00–21:00 listing only as planning guidance. The organizer is still updating the detailed 2026 schedule, participating cafes and program-specific fees.

  • The ITS World Congress overlaps from October 19–23. Its expected attendance makes early KTX and hotel booking sensible, although it does not prove every train or room will sell out.

  • A day trip works for the main Anmok venue, one meal and one extra district; stay overnight if evening events or a slower citywide route matter more.

When and where is the Gangneung Coffee Festival 2026?

The confirmed dates and main address

The 18th Gangneung Coffee Festival runs for five days from Wednesday, October 21, through Sunday, October 25, 2026. The official festival site identifies Gangneung Coffee Street as the main event area, and the current tourism listing gives 20-1 Changhae-ro 14beon-gil, Gangneung-si as the practical address. That point is beside Anmok Beach on the East Sea. Save both the English address and the Korean name 강릉커피거리 because local map apps often find Korean place names more reliably.

Why the venue is bigger than one coffee street

The 2026 planning announcement describes a citywide expansion beyond the familiar Anmok strip, with activity intended for Jumunjin, Gangneung Jungang Market, Ojukheon and Okgye as well as the main coffee street. That does not mean every district will run the same program all day. Treat Anmok as the anchor, then use the final official venue map to choose one additional zone. Crossing the full city for every stamp or performance would turn a coffee festival into a transport exercise.

Current hours and admission guidance

VISITKOREA currently lists festival hours of 10:00–21:00 and says fees vary by program. Those details are useful for a first plan, but they are not a promise that every booth, cafe or performance will operate for eleven hours. Individual cafes set their own opening times, and bookable experiences may have separate capacity and charges. Check the official festival homepage immediately before travel, particularly if one performance, workshop or evening session is the reason for your trip.

What is confirmed, and what is still changing?

Facts you can plan around now

The dates, five-day duration, main Anmok address and broader citywide direction are confirmed. The organizer has also posted 2026 recruitment notices for categories such as Welcome Coffee Shop, Stamp Rally and bean-market participation. These notices show the intended shape of the festival, but a recruitment category is not the same as a finished visitor schedule. Use it to understand the concept, not to promise a particular cafe, gift, route or redemption rule.

Details that are not final yet

As of August 28, the English tourism page explicitly warns that its descriptive program information is based on the 2025 festival while 2026 details are being updated. Do not present the previous opening performance, contests, fireworks or food arrangements as confirmed for a specific 2026 day. The responsible wording is simple: earlier editions included coffee tastings and barista-centered events, while the exact 2026 program, daily times, reservation method, participating businesses and fees require a fresh official check.

How to use this guide after the schedule changes

Reserve transport and a cancellable room using the confirmed dates, but leave festival blocks flexible until the detailed timetable appears. When it does, choose one priority program and build the rest of the day around its actual venue. Keep screenshots or saved pages for reference, then reopen the official page before departure in case weather or crowd management changes the plan. For a broader trip not tied to the event, our two-day Gangneung itinerary covers the heritage, lake and market zones in a calmer sequence.

Why should you book trains and hotels early?

A major congress overlaps for three days

The 32nd Gangneung ITS World Congress is scheduled at Gangneung Olympic Park from October 19–23, overlapping the coffee festival on October 21–23. Its official overview anticipates about 60,000 participants from 90 countries. From that scale, we infer a higher-than-usual risk of limited hotel inventory, busy KTX departures and slower local roads. It is still an inference: the attendance target does not guarantee a particular hotel will sell out or that every train will be full.

Know when KORAIL normally releases seats

KORAIL's current policy opens ordinary train tickets at 07:00 KST one month before departure. If that rule remains unchanged, October 21 seats should open on September 21 and October 25 seats on September 25. Check the official notice because special sales windows and timetable adjustments can override the general rule. The official fare table effective September 1, 2026 lists a standard adult fare of KRW 27,600 from Seoul Station to Gangneung and KRW 26,000 from Cheongnyangni. Confirm the displayed train, station, fare and refund terms before paying.

Choose cancellation terms, not only a room view

Book accommodation as soon as your dates are credible, then compare free-cancellation deadlines, the exact room category and the final transfer after an evening event. A cheap room becomes poor value if it requires two infrequent buses after dark. If you are still deciding whether Gangneung deserves a night, compare the travel-time logic in our Seoul day-trip guide. A day trip is valid; it simply gives you less protection against queues, weather and a late-running program.

How do you reach the festival from Seoul without a car?

Take KTX-Eum to Gangneung Station

Direct KTX-Eum journeys from Seoul take about two hours, making rail the cleanest option for most visitors. Search both Seoul Station and Cheongnyangni against your hotel location instead of assuming the nominally central station creates the fastest door-to-door trip. Reserve the outward and return journeys together when both are available, keep the official ticket accessible offline and leave time to find the correct platform. Our Korea travel essentials guide covers the practical preparation for a regional rail trip.

Continue from Gangneung Station to Anmok

The Korea Tourism Organization's June 2026 transport guidance lists buses 300-1, 223-1, 225-1 and 314-1 between Gangneung Station and Anmok Beach, with a normal journey of about 15 minutes; a taxi is also about 15 minutes in ordinary traffic. Festival and congress traffic can lengthen either estimate. Check the live Gangneung bus system when you arrive, confirm the direction before boarding and work backward from your return train rather than trusting a static timetable.

Use a transport card and selective taxis

Gangneung's city buses accept transport cards; the city currently lists the regular adult fare as KRW 1,530 by card or KRW 1,700 in cash. A card already used in Seoul is therefore useful, and our Korea transport-card guide explains the setup. Buses should be the base of a car-free visit, but a taxi can be the sensible tool when a long wait threatens a booked train. Mobile data helps with live routes, so arrange an eSIM or SIM before leaving Seoul.

What is a realistic one-day festival itinerary?

Morning: make Anmok the first priority

Choose an early train that reaches Gangneung with enough time to arrive at Anmok around the festival's published opening window. Begin at the official information point or venue map, confirm which 2026 activities are actually running that day, then select one tasting, market or stage block rather than joining every visible queue. The Anmok Travel Lounge operates 09:00–18:00 under the current city listing and provides a useful staffed reference point, lounge and restroom, but do not assume it will store luggage unless that service is explicitly confirmed.

Lunch: step away from the coffee queue

Plan a real meal outside the tasting sequence because the final 2026 food-vendor arrangement is not yet confirmed. Nearby choices change, so verify a restaurant rather than copying an old recommendation. Chodang Dubu Village is a practical next district for soft tofu dishes, while Gangneung Jungang Market suits groups that want different snacks and meals. Drink water between samples and share tasting portions when possible; more caffeine does not create a better understanding of Gangneung's coffee culture.

Afternoon: choose Gyeongpo or Ojukheon

For clear weather, move north to a short Gyeongpo Beach and lake walk. The beach itself is open around the clock, but October is a walking visit, not a reason to assume supervised swimming. The Gyeongpo Travel Lounge currently operates 09:00–18:00. In rain or strong wind, choose Ojukheon instead: the house and municipal museum open 09:00–18:00, last admission is 17:00, adult admission is KRW 3,000 and the official listing suggests about one hour. Check temporary notices before traveling across town.

Gyeongpo Lake provides a separate afternoon walk; it is outside the main Anmok coffee-festival area.[4]

Evening: use downtown only if the train allows

Gangneung Jungang Market is currently listed from 08:30–21:00, with hours varying by shop, and it works well for an early dinner before the station. Add a participating downtown cafe or stamp stop only after the final festival map confirms it. Set a firm departure from downtown that includes traffic, station navigation and at least a thirty-minute margin. If an official evening program matters more than the last train, stay overnight rather than turning the final hour into a race across Gangneung.

The covered lanes of Gangneung Jungang Market illustrate the downtown stop; check each shop and any festival participation separately.[5]

Where should you stay during the festival?

Anmok for the main festival atmosphere

Anmok is the logical base when coffee street access and a morning sea view lead your priorities. You can walk back after a main-area evening program instead of watching the bus clock. The trade-offs are possible street noise, festival crowds and another transfer to the station or northern attractions. Confirm that a sea-view room truly faces the water, ask about luggage holding and read recent comments about soundproofing rather than booking from the neighborhood label alone.

Gyeongpo for a coastal break

Gyeongpo offers a wider accommodation choice around the beach and lake and suits travelers who want the trip to feel like a coastal overnight, not only an event visit. It also places you nearer Olympic Park than Anmok, which may be useful or may add congress traffic. Map the exact bus stop and late return because the area name covers more ground than a booking screen suggests. Keep the Anmok transfer in your schedule rather than treating the two beaches as one walkable venue.

Downtown for KTX and market logistics

A stay between Gangneung Station and Jungang Market is less romantic but easier for luggage, a late arrival and an early departure. It also gives you food choices after the festival. The cost is another ride to Anmok each day. For a two-night trip, downtown can be the most balanced base: use one day for the festival and one for Ojukheon and Gyeongpo, following the zone logic in our complete Gangneung itinerary.

How should you eat, taste and handle October weather?

Treat coffee tasting as a sequence

Start with water and food, ask what is being served, and take notes if you genuinely want to compare beans or brewing methods. Not every oceanfront cafe is a specialist roaster, and not every excellent cup comes with the best view. Decide whether each stop is for technique, local history, dessert or scenery. Brand names and opening hours change, so the final participating-cafe list is more useful than a permanent ranking written before the festival.

Prepare for wind, rain and crowds

Late October on the East Sea can feel cooler and windier than central Seoul. Bring a light insulating layer and rain protection, wear shoes suitable for long standing, and keep outdoor blocks short if coastal warnings are posted. Anmok's main road is relatively straightforward, but temporary booths, queues and cables can change accessible paths. Travelers with mobility needs should ask the organizer about the final layout and accessible facilities, then use the travel lounge or a taxi to reduce unnecessary distance.

What should you confirm before the festival?

  • Reopen the official festival site for the final daily timetable, venue map, participating cafes, fees and reservation instructions.

  • Book KTX on KORAIL, confirm the actual Seoul departure station and preserve a generous Gangneung Station return buffer.

  • Check your hotel's cancellation deadline, luggage policy and real late-evening route from Anmok or another festival venue.

  • Review the live Gangneung bus system, local weather and any congress-related traffic notice on the day of travel.

  • Save Korean place names for Gangneung Coffee Street, Gangneung Station, Gyeongpo, Ojukheon and Jungang Market.

Last verified: August 28, 2026. The festival dates and main address are confirmed; detailed 2026 programs are still being updated. Recheck the organizer, KORAIL and Gangneung City before booking or travel.

မကြာခဏမေးလေ့ရှိသော မေးခွန်းများ

When is the Gangneung Coffee Festival 2026?

The festival is confirmed for October 21–25, 2026. The main planning address is Gangneung Coffee Street at Anmok Beach, with additional activity intended across Gangneung.

Is the Gangneung Coffee Festival free?

The current official tourism listing says fees vary by program. Do not assume every tasting, workshop or reservation is free; check the final 2026 program and booking rules.

Can I visit the festival as a day trip from Seoul?

Yes. KTX-Eum takes about two hours and Anmok is normally about 15 minutes from Gangneung Station by bus or taxi. Reserve a return seat and leave a traffic buffer.

Why should I book a Gangneung hotel early for the festival?

The ITS World Congress overlaps October 19–23 and officially anticipates large international attendance. That supports an elevated-demand warning, although it does not guarantee every room will sell out.
